A lucky few, however, will be spending their summer in a new holiday home.

The beach and lake houses in this gallery have all won New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) architecture awards this year, and it’s not hard to see why. If there’s a common theme it would have to be their pared-back simplicity, openness and the use of timber, concrete, glass and steel.
